blown fuses

a couple of days ago i noticed that my windscreen washers weren't working. however the wipers themselves were working and the rear wiper and washer are all working. today i tried to swing out my mirrores and nothing happened. on seeing that the cigar lighter was on the same fuse as the mirrors i connected up my cool box to test it on the cigar lighter and found that that wasn't working either, so i changed the fuse. as soon as i switched on the ignition the fuse blew again and the radio went off, i tried the horn and that didn't work either.

i had asearch of the forum and found that the wires running between the door post and door could be bared, thus causing a short. I have looked at the cables running between the door post and the door and they do look to be ok.

is there anybody out there who had the same experience or have any idea what is going on, i am, unfourtunatly not to well versed in the electrical side of vehicles.

your views and help would be most welcome

thanks for your reply ybb, no I haven't checked the earth wires because as i said in my querry i'm not that versed in vehicle electrics, so would you be kind enough as to tell me where i can find them.

Have you looked under the grommet/cowl thing where the door loom goes into the body & not just at the wires exposed when the cable covers removed between the door & body panel...?

I can't remember of the top of my head if the rear ciggy is on the same circuit dave,is there anything plugged into the rear socket that could be tripping the fuse? Maybe a collapsed plug adaptor or summat?

I had the exact same issue Dave mine turned out to be the fag lighter shorting it all, was chasing it for ages replaced my lighter with a £5 jobbie from a factor job was a goodn

update

i've managed to disconnect the two fag lighters and replaced the fuse, it hasn't blown and the radio is back on. however the mirrors still won't work nor the washers or horn. i'll replace the hore fuse when i get some this morning, but can't find a fuse for the washers

It's the same fuse as the wipers Dave, so you washer problem lies elsewhere

i have found that the front fag lighter is the duff one and have removed it. Do you think that untill the lighter is replaced that the washer, horn and mirrors won't work because it needs to complete a circuit?

No, the circuit isn't completed until the lighter is pushed in.

happy to report that the washer is sorted, replaced the bottle and pump thanks to Tonybee. It looks as if my problem is in the cableing between door and door post. So tomorrow will attempt to strip it back and see what i can find

Excellent news. I'll be (we'll be!) very interesting to hear the details of the wiring problems - seems a lot of wiring in that area gets fatigued. But why would a washer wire go anywhere near the door?

Whilst trying a 12v electric hair dryer in our bongo, it apparently blew the fuse. According to the info on Bongo Fury, the cigarette (front) is controlled by fuse No. 8, however so are the electric mirrors and these still worked.

After a bit of stuggle I managed to push the lighter out of the dash by removing the small panel under the steering column held by only two screws and reaching behind the dash, I could then see that there was a "fuse" on the rear of the cigarette lighter which had burnt out.

I removed the insulation washer, cut one of the wires and soldered in an inline fuse, at present a 15 amp fuse is fitted but I may reduce this, I also noticed that on the connector which plugs onto the lighter is what appears to be thermostatic cut out which can be reset by pressing on the small plasic flap.
