Hello all!

I have just fitted my mason alarm and have certainly had a brown pants moment!

Please advise - i'm seriously stressing out about this.

bongo temp is at idle - 01.00 position
bongo driving - 01.30 position
bongo up hill / high acceleration - 01.30- 01.45!!!

At what point do i stop my car due to engine overheat (mine was prone to doing that until i 'think' i fixed it last week!) So forgive me if I'm paranoid!

Is the actual 'H' point the same as it would be without the Mason? As in the 'STOP YOUR CAR OR IT WILL DIE' point???

I have to drive my bongo to work tomorrow and am very worried about him.

Any advice would literally save my bacon.

yes thats sounds right, 1 to 1.30 normal and will rise further on hard acceleration , just keep an eye on the temperature gauge as it is now reading the coerrect temperature as it should. if the needle goes into the red then you have a problem

You need to set the alarm for your bongo,and your own driving situations. With time, the tiny tweaks made to the adjuster on the alarm will mean you have it set just right for you. Everybodies vehicle is different (the engines aren't exactly built to formula 1 tolerances )as is, your own driving style,and the environment in which you live all have a bearing on what to set the alarm to. That's why there isn't a "Default" setting for the alarm.

The mason alarm has the added benefit of reflecting when the stat opens on the bongo too,if stuck in heavy traffic for a period of time,you can actually see the needle drop as the stat opens/rad fans operate.

A very steep incline can affect the gauge reading though,(and i mean very steep). I parked on a drive once that was maybe 45º facing uphill,as i glanced down the reading on the temp gauge had dropped to the standard gauge's 11 o'clock (disconcerting once you get accustomed to seeing the gauge around the 1 or 2 o'clock mark) The gauge will return to normal operation once back on level ground for a few moments.

When you say you have to adjust the alarm to suit the vehicle. All you can do as far as adjustment is concerned, is just to tweak the potentiometer to set the alarm threshold is that right?

basically my question is:

the guage goes from 10:00 - 02:00. C to H respectively
10:00 or below means the engine is off / hasn't really started to rise in temp.
01:00 is the max temp the needle gets to during engine idle
01:00 - 01:45 is driving conditions (accellerating, cruising etc)

But when i took out my bongo, the guage was nearly touching 2'oclock after a half an hour journey! (so this is basically as high as it can get before crossing the line on the temp guage into 'red' (or white in my case).

is this ok? my Mason is currently calibrated to 4.8-5 on the POT.

also - if i were to in theory 'cut' the wires to my mason alarm, would it immediately go back to normal bongo temp guage? I am thinking of making a small junction box for my alarm for easy disconnect / reconnect during the time in which i am calibrating.

That's exactly how the mason alarm on my bongo behaves, mine is set to 4.5.

Can't comment on the wire snip query,though it seems a good idea,the more options the better i guess....

Your readings appear to be a bit higher than the norm but each Bongo is different so it's not really an issue. As has already been said, you need to adjust the alarm to only go off when the engine gets hotter than you would normally expect. Start with it at a low figure and when at your normal hot level, turn it up until it just goes off. Trial and error I'm afraid but it has to be that way due to variations in cooling systems etc.

Don't chop the cable unless you clip each individual wire separately. If you cut the lot in one go you effectively short out the gauge. I know because I buggered up my Townace by doing that

my mason alarm is set a tad above 5. the needle on the gauge does move about a lot, ive had the needle just touching the red mark on the gauge, without any probs. it does depend on the road conditions and your driving. mine was set to five when i took a holiday in the highlands , not moved it back dont think i need to.

It probably is just because my bongo does appear to run hotter than others anyway.

When i first checked my temp guage when i bought it, (pre-mason), then after all my troubles it seems to be at a normal of 11.5. Perhaps this is why mine is slightly higher after fitting the mason!

ah these bongo's hey!?! I was saying 'I hate my car' last night, but no... I've slept on it and i still love him, even though he's not perfect.
