Contact him through the "contact seller" or pm him through the forum & let him know which ones you want, or ask him which ones he sells most of? See if he's selling the clips as well, if not don't use cheap rubbish, bigdaddycain managed to source some top notch ones via Manflex.

The coolant alarm has proved itself over & over, several times just after new hoses have been fitted  . They are not the definitive answer to coolant problems nor have they ever been hailed as such, but they will decrease the chance of engine damage greatly, especially if fited with a Mason temp alarm or TM2 :D I'm not going to get drawn into a debate over it - it's all been said before  It's just a recommendation & an opinion on my part Keefy
Are you sure that there has been a debate on the subject of alarms . I have done a thorough search on the subject and do you believe it, I cannot find any mention of these elusive items. I'll go to the foot of our stairs

On a more serious note. I still hope to replace my hoses this year, and I would love to replace the metal tubes as well. Where can you get such things?

Right keefysher, we need some FMEA - what about some good old Fault Tree Analysis? Whad'ya say?....

...What am I on about? I can't even work out your cryptic message from earlier this week :( #-o

I have a confession to all....I DO NOT HAVE AN ALARM YET!!! Phew, glad I got that off my chest.

I do have good RAC cover though

hoses....or alarm?....hoses or alarm....hmmm...????

Surely with new hoses/pipes and a flushed/refilled/bled cooling system the only likely problem with the cooling system will be when it works correctly and the water is expelled via the expansion tank breather/outlet (?) due to the design of the cooling system. This is the sympton shown on several recent 'overheating' Bongos mentioned on the forum. Having a coolant alarm that monitors level in the expansion tank will serve no useful purpose wrt to damage to the engine as the water will have gone, and engine probably seized, before the expansion tank is showing low level. You are more likely to notice coloured liquid moving up your windscreen, or a sickly odour and steam, than an alarm going off.
It's true that a Bongo can overheat and incur damage without losing any coolant. i.e. blow the head gasket or warp/crack the head. The question is why does this happen ? I belive that in a good number of cases it happens because a previous "overheating" event has happened, either through coolant loss, water pump/belt failure or w.h.y. !! Having a coolant loss alarm fitted may well have prevented this. Also many cases are reported where coolant is lost overnight/on a journey caused by any number of reasons which are not down to poor maintainance. A waterpump can fail at any time, as can a radiator top plastic bit come unstuck or a metal pipe stub come adrift. A alarm will warn you of all these events and many more.
A dirty header tank normally means a overheating event has taken place in the past, undetected damage may have been done , waiting to emerge just when you need it most. No reasonable diy amount of preventitive maintainance will stop that.

er not sure what I've started here but there is some more food for thought. I've got the Bongo back tonight and the engine looks amazing with all the red pipes... Now the bad news. My engine has certainly had hardly any anti freeze in it at some point in its life.. possibly overheating before...
The evidence is in the STEEL pipes that the new tubes connect to. I'll take a pic of one tomorrow but one had to be cut a good 1" back in order to get some decent metal to clamp the new pipes on to. There were many other steel pipes that looked very poor condition internally, seeping at weld spots etc.
The Garage have done a great job but really I should consider replacing the Steel pipes, I'm told by the garage (and they are very very respectible, familey member works for me etc) that the Bore Caps, on the engine are also seeping at the moment as they have corroded from the inside....

Now I've got to consider, should I just let the engine be, run it accepting that one day I will get a leek. If I do, the alarm will do its job and warn me if there is a low water issue when I turn the engine on. OR do I look into replacing as many steel pipes as possible...where would I stop on "renovating" the engine ?

mmmmmmm, I love my Bongo though :D

As you know they are that bad, get the pipes & core plugs done, otherwise you're never going to be able to trust it. The alarm is there IMO to let you know when something lets go that you don't know about, it's Russian Roulette to keep going when you know there are problems. Sorry :(

keefysher wrote:alarm is 2 level failsafe. I don't believe the current offering would pass scrutiny under a full FMEA.
You're right, I seem to remember Ford being the first "industry" to use FMEA, after the US forces. Then years of no preceived value until an ICI site went BOOM! Could be wrong mind, but interesting all the same.

2 level failsafe can't be difficult, can it haydn? 2 additional probes at the top of the expansion tank?

keefysher,,,You seem to have missed my point. All you say is true regarding maintainance...What I am on about is all the other things that cannot be covered by regular checks.

We have considered a two level alarm....came to the conclusion that although it can be done it would be a bit pointless. If the level of coolant rises in the header tank above the normal expansion point, this would be caused by gases from the head joint and so the damage would have already been done and no coolant level alarm would be of help. It would only tell you that your head/gasket had expired.
Anyone any views on this and have I got it right.
At the BIG Bash approx 20 alarms were fitted on site. Of these 20 at least 2 thirds had a LOW coolant level and a few VERY low level. One person attending the Masterclass had had his Bongo 7 months and thought the engine was under the bonnet. Many knew nothing about hoses/tanks/pipes/filters etc

I was also expressing an informed opinion backed up by scenarios that illustrate the need for prevention to be as far as reasonably practicable the route to eliminating overheating problems.

In cost terms, the preventative method of hose replacement by a DIYer is not that much more (within £45), than the cost of devices that do not prevent overheating, and still incur rectification costs in the event of a hose failure.

The scenario I used has not been debated openly.

Debates are multi faccetted discussions where opinions are expressed openly.

Balance is required by owners in determining where their resources are best deployed. Balance cannot be drawn if alternatives are not proposed and given a fair hearing.

I don't understand this "quote" thingy.
On 16th July (above) @10.52pm in "keefysheer's" reply it says...
