Did I read/hear somewhere that it's a good idea to grease the towball?

I always think its a good idea to, yah got two surfaces (the ball & hitch) creating what is essentially a joint.

That is assuming you have not got the modern anti-snake device fitted into your trailer/caravan tow hitch
Usually a red push down handle on the tow hitch...

Only grease the old style hitches on trailers
DO NOT grease the new style that replace a stabaliser (alko/winterhoff etc on caravans) they have plates that tighten on the ball and wont operate properly if lubricated.

It's an old'un I have tinkered with to get up to scratch, as we are off camping in under two weeks.

as an alternative to grease put some greased paper over the ball before the hitch bis put on.
