Incidentally, same noise here, "hissing" from beneath passenger seat. Couldn't hear it when I had a squeaky alt-belt, popped some wd40 on that and then could hear this hissing. Generally more noticable when under load (i.e. when pushing up a hill, or accelerating) than when cruising/slowing.

I think it might be coming from the alternator itself (bearing?), but not really sure. Someone here has recommended a funnel on a hose stethoscope type thingy, so might give that a try.

Could it be the anti squeal plates on the rear brakes ? I've had this for a while, and have learnt to live with it. It disappears when I brake, or am travelling above 30mph or so.

I had a hissing noise on the left hand side, turns out it was the misses moaning.

Well just been out for a short trip today, Laura was sat in front, noise started after about 4 miles. Laura said it was coming from the front passenger wheel, not the rear  Having just had the front brake pads replaced I reckon that is where the problem lies  so getting it checked tomorrow  richrich I reckon you may be right about the anti squeal plates
