Cooling system

Thats quite possible...With the tank cap in situ and no pressure in the system.

A water pump is, or should be designed to be most efficient at the expected engine speed. For us that is around 2 to 3000 rpm I would have though. You should read the section on cooling in A G Bells book on 4 stroke performace tuning, it is an eye opener

Bit like filling a hosepipe with water and putting your thumb over the end....water won't flow till you remove your thumb and release the vacuum

Nope, you got it right.

Find it difficult to believe that the cap vaccum is keeping the coolant in - that's a sizable hole where the stat lives

Correct, as both main hoses drop below the engine waterways it does the same. Are we getting there?

Seen this before but it is interesting reading and could be relevant.
However I still belive the cooling system on a Bongo, is good if well maintained.

When you were playing with the system Haydn did you check the pressure in the system?

Can't shoot it down cos' I don't know but, if the heaters are permanently "on", with the heat in the van being regulated by flaps altering the airflow, why should it matter when the heaters aren't needed?

If they aren't being used, there is no airflow and thus little if any cooling effect from them.

TGP..I will look into this again but I did measure at around 4psi when up to 90 DegreesC.. I will try and work out a way of being more accurate.
The link I gave above is interesting reading.
The last paragraph gives me a nice warm feeling.

Was that with the engine running, did it increase with engine speed?

Let's put it this way Mel, if i looked at a schematic of the bongo's cooling system for long enough, i'd be inclined to put my hands over my ears,and start singing la la very loudly before my simple noggin overheated!

I won't pretend to understand the complete ins & outs of the cooling system, i can follow some of it, to a point...

Haydn the K engine got me on this path as it was in a Caterham 7 that I set the suspension up for a race series. Landrover in the Freelander eventually said there was a problem and fitted the stat in the outlet. We had already used a restrictor to increase pressure in the head

I've seen simpler cooling systems on 300,000 tonne supertankers with engine rooms the size of cathedrals
