Before refitting the undertray I would like to replace its heavily soiled
felt(???) lining.
Has anyone done this and what materials are involved ?
Alternatives
a) refit plastic tray without new lining
b) do not refit plastic tray at all

The felt lining is there to reduce noise radiated from the engine. It will make quite a noticeable difference, especially from the outside.

It may actually do this job better when saturated with oil etc!

Sorry, no advice on cleaning it though.....

Think a power washer may just destroy the felt, I tried cleaning mine with reasonable results, just using an old soft brush, some detergent & a hose. It'is amazing the difference in noise levels running with it off for a week after fitting the coolant hoses. I was getting severe paranoia with allsorts of new noises appearing everywhere  Happy now, all back together & normal noises 8-[ :D

I'd skip that option bongorant, that tray must offer some protection from the deluge of water that splashes up when hitting standing water hard enough?

It can also make a hell of a difference to cooling as it should be designed to duct the hot air away to the rear and it improves the aerodynamics of the underside no end as well.
