Trying to find a possible pattern here.

Proper biodiesel (i.e. not straight veg oil) is will quickly corrode butyl rubber, but not in the typical blend ratios used (5-20% bio). This is used for seals in some fuel injection pumps, but I do not know if this includes the Bongo.

I have regularly used up to 50% blend over nearly four years with no problems, apart from the usual flush-through of accumulated crud which blocks the fuel filter when you first start using it.

Have I interpreted your question correctly, and does anyone know if such seals are a component of the Bongo fuel injection pump?

OK - I've just read your other posts and now understand. To settle this if you send me your old seal I'll stick it in some bio and see what happens. It would be interesting to see how a replacement seal behaves so I might order one up and try that too.

Good man - could you PM me your address Simon? Cheers

I just wonder if the new green coloured seals are a different composition and suitable for bio/SVO/veg

Sorry it has been long time a'coming, but I have done my bit as I said I would and have tested Dandy's old seal by total immersion. Duly baptised, I have posted my results on my server which you should be able to find here:

http://www.archewyve.net/pumpseal

In my defence, I decided to extend the test as I was not seeing any results, and so the seal has endured 32 days in the gunk.

For those who want the short version, I do not believe I could suggest that the biodiesel had affected the seal in any way at all. You can scrutinise the piccies for yourselves.

I will now leave the seal to 'dry out' for a day or two and then immerse into pure veg oil as requested by Dandy. However, whereas I half expected to see some change with bio, I certainly do not with veggie oil, but we'll see.

So, that complete, I can go off Christmas shopping now, unless I can find something else to do instead. Anything, really....

Cheers,

SH
