Ta for the answer, I knew the pump was gear driven
the question was brought on by other engines having
so little clearance between valves and pistons that
you have to move the cam pulley in slots to get it
absolutely spot on or things will touch, 8 thousands
of a inch was quoted on one engine as clearance,
the Bongo probably as more clearance and is not
as critical, my last 3 diesels had to be pegged seems
the Bongo doesn't. Tried looking at the link but it comes
up with page not found or some such.

Just found a way into the link and you are right it does
not need to be pegged, the pulley is pegged to the cam and
cant be moved in relation to it, also found out the engine
as 2 balance shafts so that's why it's so smooth.
