Changing Cam Belt

Post by birti » Mon Sep 24, 2007 8:37 pm

Hi

I have recently bought my first Mazda Bongo and am wanting to change the Cam belt myself. Has anyone tried this? Has anyone got any tech data or helpful tips on this subject?

Also, can anyone confirm what engine make is in my Bongo? I have been told it's a Mazda Diesel and also a Ford Ranger by different people. :?

Try using Search as I'm sure I've read some good detailed advice on doing a cambelt change. I had a look in the Members Area but there doesnt appear to be a factsheet there

i have done it. a very simple job and one i would recommend you do yourself i've never seen a simpler one before.
The manual can be downloaded from nz ond you only need the cam belt section.

NZ stands for New Zealand. http://www.jpnz.co.nz. This company in New Zealand have translated both the owners handbook and the Workshop manual for the Bongo Friendee from Japanese to English. Both books are available from Ian in the club shop. The workshop manual being available for £70.00.

What Red was refering to is that there is a cheaper alternative of downloading just the part that you require over the net. I am not up to date as to the current cost of this option.

All the diesel cars I have worked on have had
to have the crank, cam, and pump, pegged to change
the belt, the cam pulley usually as slotted bolts so
you can set them up spot on, I have seen no
mention of pegging the Bongo engine, am I right
in thinking it's not needed ???

The pump is gear driven and isn't affected by the belt Ralph. The sprockets for the cam and intermediate shafts are the same size.

Thanks to Lushprojects again for the wonderful translation service :)

Ta for the answer, I knew the pump was gear driven
the question was brought on by other engines having
so little clearance between valves and pistons that
you have to move the cam pulley in slots to get it
absolutely spot on or things will touch, 8 thousands
of a inch was quoted on one engine as clearance,
the Bongo probably as more clearance and is not
as critical, my last 3 diesels had to be pegged seems
the Bongo doesn't. Tried looking at the link but it comes
up with page not found or some such.
Thanks
ps
Just found a way into the link and you are right it does
not need to be pegged, the pulley is pegged to the cam and
cant be moved in relation to it, also found out the engine
as 2 balance shafts so that's why it's so smooth.

thanks again
