reversing lamps

Post by brorabongo » Mon Sep 17, 2007 8:59 pm

Reversing the other night and could not see a thing out of the back window :? Does anyone know if the lamp can be replaced by LED's, if so what fittings are they? Or from searching on here, I have see someone added lights on the bumper would this be a better idea? I already have the single fog in the rear bumber.

Cheers.

Could you not fit a flush fit reversing lamp ( to match the fog) with LED's in addition to upgrading the cluster located reversing lamp?

Just been quickly checking ebay for such a thing, but with no luck.

The search continues!!

What type of fitting/lamp is used for reverse?

Hi Brora

Try http://www.ultraleds.co.uk they may have what you're after. If you need bright look out for ones that use high power leds(1W and above) e.g. Luxeon stars or similar. They're fairly easy to spot since they usually have a heat sink built into the body. The obvious dowside is that they run very hot.

Flush fit reversing lamp to match the fog ( uses same housing but with a clear lense - fits to LHS of bumper) from Far East Services £10 plus post plus the dreaded VAT

Haven't checked the bulbs yet, but check out "jzautoled" on ebay, seems to stock just about any led replacement bulb, same guy I bought my internal leds from I think.

Seems a bit overkill compared to £14 for a flush fit reversing lamp - but - - they look great - surely cost an arm and a leg though !
Doesn't say how they are mounted -are they flush fit? Is there space behind the bumper ? - probably yes . The 'rib' running along the middle of the bumper is 80mm - they would just overlap this by 3 or 4 mm top and bottom - how would this going to affect a neat flush fit /seal?

Hmm, they look good brora...

I had the same problem as you with regards to rearward visibility.

I adapted mikeonb4c's concept of flush fitting fogs, to flush fitting clears, I just remove the clear bulbs at m.o.t. time, and replace with red bulbs.

So i have the option of 4 reverse lights when the need arises

Hey Bigdaddy,

How do you adjust the lighting to the fact that the clear lamps are only supposed to come on when you are reversing and the red lamp on when you are going forward in fog.

Simple MG,...The switch and wiring remain unaltered, the factory fit reverse lights illuminate as reverse is engaged, then i click the "foglight" switch if extra illumination is neccessary.

I make sure i always carry the red bulbs in the glovebox, just in case of a sudden "peasouper" but, i have been lucky so far, as i've only needed to swap over the bulbs for the m.o.t.

If you wanted to go overboard you could fit three flush fit lamps on the rear bumper - two reversing and one fog!!
