oil on nearside front wheelarch

Post by tridentlee » Tue Aug 07, 2007 4:24 pm

just spotted some oil on the inside of the front wheelarch, on closer inspection it seem to be coming from the drive sharft at the wheel end, is this a common problem and is it an easy fix as i am going away in her next week, any advice greatly appreciated, lee

Hi, Sounds like a split gaitor as I had the same thing when mine went, managed to seperate the shaft from the cv fairly easy and changed gaitor but when the other side split couldn`t seperate the shaft so rebuilt suspension and put a polly bag around gaitor to keep lube in and dirt out so as not to wreck the cv joint. Don`t cut off the old gaitor until youv`e seperated the shaft because if it`s seized at least you can use the van until you can get it sorted like I did. The gaitors seem to split due to an age and standing around whilst being imported problem. Hope this helps. Ian. :) ...

Check the diff level in case you are losing a bit of oil. You get grease in the CV joints and this looks quite different to oil when it gets flung out.
