Welcome Mick - you shouldn't be using
RED diesel
Drain off the muck dragged up from the empty tank by loosening the drain screw on the bottom of the filter housing.
Might be better to change the filter anyway. If you do, then half fill the new filter with injector cleaner and the other half with diesel - it'll start without bleeding.

I dont think the primer / no primer is an age thing. I use to service the Bongos I sell myself last year, (now get it done elsewhere), but crertainly came accross plenty without a primer. Certainly need a good battery to self prime then.

Sounds like you've sucked up a load of muck and your filter is blocked. Try loosening an injector and then cranking engine, to see if fuel is getting through.

Did you clean the filter mesh / replace the fuel filter?

Is it possible for the fuel line to get blocked at the fuel tank end? is there a technique for blowing back into the line if so? Techie advice needed

Having spent far too many hours fixing the bongo fuel system I have done the whole clean and bleed.
the areas that might get blocked are the obvious filter and the little filter under the bango where the pipe meets the fuel pump ( about 2" down under a spring).
The pump self primes. An empty tank requires more than two cans worth of fuel to pick up properly. It will start and cough and need restarting several times to fill the system properly.
Some filter have priming pumps others don't (mine doesn't) but as said earlier the engine elf primes so just keep tryin it. took me about 4 start cough stops before it cleared.
Check you haven't squashed a pipe.
If this doesn't help you may have a more serious problem, but if it was fine before running out there is no reason why it should have.
Good luck
Andy
