Does anyone know how much atfluid goes in to the gearbox after you have drained out the old?
I suppose it depends on how well you drain it but someone must know approximately!
Do I buy a 5 litre tin or a ten litre tin or some size in between???
please help!

I'm about to buy a Bongo (I hope). its done 67k miles. Some seem to say it improves the autobox change if you drain the oil and put in new. Others say doing this often triggers problems in an otherwise happy box, the supporting argument being that they are reckoned to be 'sealed for life' up to 150-200k miles unless something untoward happens.
What do the experts think?

my van has only done 47K so I would be intrested to hear the comments.

Well thats really interesting and thanks dandywarhol. Sounds like I would be wise to have a full 'baseline' service by a specialist (like Ian Taylor at Cheddleton who is not too far off like me) when I pick up my Bongo (hopefully) on Thursday i.e.
- drain and refill coolant (backflush rad at the same time maybe?)
- change oil and oil filter
- change air filter
- change autogearbox oil
- check brake wear
- check that the little drain thingy that blocks up and causes the heater motor fan to get wet, rust and seize
Anything else? I've not included the cambelt as the one I'm buying hada new one put on my its importer 5000 miles ago.
I'll probably get Ian to fit a leisure battery and I'll treat it to an expensive waxoil / underseal job with Chassis Clean as recommended by another Bongo owner.

Everything above seems a good idea Mike BUT - if you get a chassis clean make sure it is THOROUGHLY dry before having it undersealed.
I got mine waxoiled in all the cavities (they even removed the rear lamps and interior trims to access around the arches), the underside wire brushed and sprayed with waxoil - great job

Just spoke with the guy whose Bongo I'm hoping to buy tomorrow. He is absolutely insistent that in the motor trade (which he has been in for 35 odd years) the rule is don't change auto gearbox oil if avoidable. If a check shows it is the right colour (pinkish?) and it 'smells right' then the risks of changing it are best avoided. The change can dislodge swarf which then moves and blocks a valve, and in any case yoy can never drain the torque converter of the old oil. All this means nothing to me but I'm wary of changing the gearbox oil now. Anyone care to discuss?
