Bamboozled by bad Bongo 😳

Post by Doodah71 » Sat Apr 26, 2025 3:18 pm

Hi
I joined the club today and purchased a 97 Bongo 2.5 Diesel. Now I know I'm an idiot but we (Mum & I) agreed to buy it and have it delivered from Birmingham (solihull) to Eastbourne before clapping eyes on it.
It arrived at lunchtime on the back of a tow truck. Alarm bells went off but Mum said "Of course he had to tow it, he needs to get back!"...fair enough.
Then he tells us he has to jump start it as its been sat unused and the battery has gone flat. I'm thinking "Why not charge it overnight if delivering today?" Mum says, "Yeah my camper does that if I don't use it for a while, it's understandable."
Anyway, he stalls it 3 times and rejumps it and I tell him to leave it running to give it some charge.
Mother then parts with the money and he goes on his way, apparently he has another camper to collect in our town?

At this point I climb in to find it's not just the tyres thick with mud. It's FILTHY inside. The carpets are absolutely thick with mud and dirt. The 1st rear seat has a seam busted open. There's a 2.5 inch rust hole behind the offside wheel arch.
Okay okay....I wasn't expecting perfection and knew it would need work (although advert states it's great & clean everywhere).
Anyway, after about an hour, we decide to go indoors and grab some cash to take it to get valeted. I turned it off and Mum jokes, "Check it starts again  " ....low & behold...NOTHING!
Not even a tiny cough or splutter!
Needless to say I'm gutted. I expected it not to be perfect, it's not even converted yet, but it's supposed to be a great runner (see the add)
So, any ideas if there's a decent mechanic near Eastbourne that fixes Bongos? It's due an MOT in August so I need to get started on it. Can we buy starter motors? Where? If that's the issue.
Sorry my first post isn't more positive!!

Oh dear, I think you have a lot of work coming your way, did you check the MoT status for the last few years ?

These companies do a range of spares, not all will have everything so try them all;
For smaller parts its probably best to ring companies as not all the smaller parts make it on to the web sites!

Umm, buying cars online seems the norm these days, personally I’d always want to get a good look, and equally important, check out the seller.
If you aren’t mechanically minded, getting an expert check it over is money well spent, a bit late now for you I guess.

If it were me, I’d be taking photos of everything, getting a mechanic to check it over and contacting the seller in writing with details as it certainly does not sound ‘as described’ in the advert. As it was a dealer, speak to Citizens Advice and Trading Standards.

So far as starting, as you identified, that sounds like battery needs charging and/or replacing (£100 should happily get a new one).
The rusty wheel arch is more of a worry as it’s likely there’s further rust / damage hidden away under there, again, a good check over by a competent mechanic is required.

Search the forum for the nearest garage who can help, I really hope you can sort it.

On a positive note, welcome, there’s lots of good info and advice on here, and other places around the tinterweb. I’m sure any local members will pop up to share advice.
Good luck, I hope you get to enjoy your Bongo soon.

Yes, we've taken photos and I've copied the adds and YouTube video before it's deleted. I don't particularly want the money back in full but a few hundred would be acceptable to get it running at least. I fully expected to be paying out on the MOT in August, then converting her over the winter months so we could travel to Wales next year...along with closer places for the weekend.
It's like having a baby....its a bit dirty and ugly when it arrives, not much use at all really. But clean it up, dress it up and put the work in and you might even be proud of it
