Hi has anyone tried am MX5 MAF sensor on a Bongo as just been to the breakers yard and the mechanic there says they are the same but a fraction of the cost

If you do a Google search for "MX5 MAF sensor" and "Mazda bongo Friendee MAF sensor" they list the same adverts.

Bit depends on 'they'.

Main dealers really don’t want to touch grey imports of any make, there are a lot of very fair independent garages out there.
