KH-SGL5 Headlight compatibility with other models?

Post by DazzaJay » Wed Nov 06, 2024 11:21 am

G'day.
So, my brothers van is doing amazing thanks to all the help this forum has given in the past! (Repeated limp home mode was a vaccuum hose fitted to the incorrect part).

But now, my brother is concerned about his headlights, they've clouded up and are pretty awful at night.

I just replaced the clear front lenses on my 2010 Mazda6, which wasn't easy, but it saved a lot of money compared with replacing the entire assembly.

But as my brothers headlights don't seem to be too expensive to replace the entire assembly, we will probably do that instead of just the lenses.

TLDR:
My brothers van is KH-SGL5
Will headlights from other models, such as the GH-SGEW fit? And if so, can someone supply me with a full list of models that are interchanable?

(As there's some Japanese Australian importers that have GH-SGEW headlights in stock, but not KH-SGL5. Is there even a difference?)

Thanks.

Most of us just polish the plastic surface that has degraded with the UV light and abrasion from being sand blasted ! I use a polishing cream available from Amazon or similar like https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=farecla+g3 about twice a year before an MoT etc. All the plastic lenses after about 1999 seem to suffer I suspect the plastic quality changed, prior to that mine didn't suffer at all.

Mainly looking to replace rather than polish. I used many different brands of polish on the 2010 Mazda6 over the years... They'd always yellow up again in about 6 months every time. In the end, they looked like this:

After replacing just the lenses with new ones:

So, looking to just replace the whole headlight assembly if we can, or even bake out and replace the lenses. But I need to know are the KH-SGL5 headlights the same as other models, such as the GH-SGEW?

There have been several styles over the years, post 1999 the mech diagrams show two types the standard H4 bulb style and the HID style;
https://www.lushprojects.com/bongoparts ... Ctr.html#9
and both show two types of unit but not sure that the info is correct as the part numbers for both are identical!!!

Thanks for that. The diagram is super helpful.

I did just have an idea, but I'm not sure how feasible it would be though...
What would I need do do if I wanted to swap out the H4 lights for HID?

The housings look like they all go to the same mounting points, but I'm guessing the wiring is all different?

Not sure that the HID style resolves the problem, mine need cleaning/polishing twice a year! Electrically they are similar but the sockets would need a complete change out as they use separate lamps. Mechanically not sure at all would need to compare them directly to see what the differences are.
