Fed up 😂

Post by Routledge1992 » Sun Sep 22, 2024 11:53 am

I ‘mistakenly’ jumped into buying a ‘cheap’ bongo that came up for sale spares or repairs.
I’ve been round the twist with it as it’s the newer drive by wire model and to be honest they’re a pile of 💩
My question is what is involved in retrofitting the old mechanical fuel pump?
And/or if I was to buy a replacement engine but the older style one with mechanical pump and fit it what else do I need to do to make it run.
Ecu? Etc will I get fault codes as it’s looking for an electrical pump connection?

For reference these are the issues I currently have
P0725 rpm signal input
I don’t have a working Rev counter so after 25mph it registers no rpm and throws a flashing hold light and limp mode

Also
P1228 turbo wastegate
P0400 egr issue
P1649- something fuel pump related

I have now blanked off the egr but left everything in tact vacuum etc I have also removed and split and cleaned the turbo and actuator rod etc and all of that is now totally free

I have no boost and the engine revs and revs but I get no power it’s basically like driving with no turbo
I’m sick of it and need some advice where to go from here local bongo specialist won’t touch it because it’s a drive by wire model

I’ve just removed transmission sump cleaned it all out replaced the oil with triple qx dexron 3 and cleaned the filter out

There will absolutely no doubt be more issues but for now that’s it 😂

Welcome aboard!

Humm, not sure there will be anyone who can guide you much on trying to refit retro older parts, its not something most people would even think of and even less attempt! No one has successfully reverse engineered the ECU, plus there are lots of variations of the ECU's over time so its quite likely that trying to fit older designs and the expect the ECU to handle them is being rather hopeful :-(

Where are you? If Bristol for example, then ADL are really good, but gonna cost you.

I'd try to get the Rev Counter (tachometer) problem sorted first - these things have sensors everywhere all feeding the ECU and thereby causing really frustrating faults, so sort that first and may eliminate other issues. Is it the tachometer instrument itself, or the input? For example, if I search the parts database for tachometer, it comes up with the PICKUP, TACHOMETER (P/N: WLA1-13-TS0) which is on the 1362 fuel injection pump!!, so I'd start by finding, testing and replacing that input sensor on the pump that feeds the Rev Counter maybe.

The members area has various ways to search the parts database, using your VIN model number and year/month of manufacture.

The other error codes P1228 & P0400 are pretty common and easier to find & fix, and also cause the engine to dump the wastegate and go into limp mode, but flash the engine warning light, not the Hold light.

I'd start with the rev counter issue. A search on the forum might find similar problems, like this: viewtopic.php?t=71499
