Glow Plug Light Flashing, Interior Lights only work whilst engine running

Post by Tesseractoid » Thu Jul 18, 2024 4:10 pm

Hi all, I recently got a bongo with a Leisure Battery and Solar Charger and I believe it has a swap loom installed with the batteries linked together.

Everything has been fine for a few months, but just noticed a problem.

The issues:

Glow plug light flashes when you turn the ignition on, stops flashing once engine is running.

Interior ceiling / door lights only work when the engine is running, and for 20 seconds after I cut the engine.

The central locking stopped working, but came back to life briefly after I ran the engine for a bit.

I've checked the voltage on both batteries, the main starter battery is at 12.6v and the LB (disconnected) is at 13.4v.

Trickle charger also told me the LB was charged.

Can anyone please help me figure out what the problem is? we're planning on going away very soon, I only noticed the problem whilst preparing the van! any suggestions most appreciated!!

Thanks!!!

Sounds like the a fuse in the split charge setup closest to the LB has blown. Hence the LB is isolated from charging and the circuits fed via that fuse and because its blown it can't be charged hence it looks fully charged, only once the engine is running and the Split Charge Relay has operated do your circuits come alive and the ECU error indication (Flashing light) clears itself because it lost backup power.

Thank you very much for your response and explanation, I'm sure you are right. I had solved it yesterday evening by swapping every fuse under the bonnet as a last resort as not of them looked blown to me, so I just did the lot and now everything seems to be working as it should. I wasn't sure if it was a bad fuse or perhaps a bad connection somewhere, so that's great to know! thanks!

My leisure battery died a few weeks back and have the same setup with a solar panel which I thought had called it a day, I started checking my switch panel, fuses etc and decided I had a problem with the main live feed running from the LB to the rear of the van, lo n behold when I was about to disconnect the LB I decided to check the inline fuse from the battery going aft it had managed to rattle itself loose in the 3 years we've had the van, a quick tighten and everything was back to normal.

That's a nice easy fix and easily overlooked as a cause of the flashing light.. 🙂
