Buy a new engine...or repair the one we have?

Post by jsw » Mon Mar 20, 2023 9:44 pm

Our garage diagnosed excessive wear in the cylinder bore/ piston rings of our engine (year: 2001, mileage 200k) and advised complete replacement as the most cost effective repair. We've been quoted £3,800 for a 'like for like' replacement i.e. a 20 year old, reconditioned Bongo engine that comes with a 3 month warranty. We couldn't get a clear answer from them on whether a new engine would have '0' on the clock.

This doesn't feel like a great deal(!) or one that will secure the longevity of the vehicle? My question: has anyone found a repair to be more cost effective in this same situation? Thanks in advance for any help people can offer :)

What engine is in the vehicle and did the garage tell you what the extent of the oversize wear on the cylinder was?.

Hi apologies for delay in responding - had notifications switched off in error; replies below

Engine = V6

Garage did not tell me what the extent of the oversize wear on the cylinder was (and I didn't ask!)

If you pop a rough location in your profile someone will likely be able to suggest a local Bongo friendly garage who can give a second opinion. :wink:

When I had a V6 engine totally seize up on me the replacement engine was £1000 + £600ish as I recall install by my local garage . It took a while to find an engine and a couple of hundred to get it shipped to my garage, but final result was well worth the money as opposed to scrapping/breaking the vehicle.

Is the engine stripped at the moment ,ie cylinder heads off ??

No, we are still driving it as the garage said it was usable, we'd just have to monitor the oil level continuously (but engine will deteriorate over time)

Ah , it looks like you and your garage have everything under control, sound like they are engine experts. Take care.
