Mystery warning alarm

We were on a long ish journey last week - the first with the new head but that’s another story - and we heard a muffled high pitched tone which wouldn’t stop.

On further investigation we found this after market alarm siren wrapped in wadding to presumably muffle it tucked up above the fuse board. I have no idea what it’s for, everything works and the fluids are good. It’s not the coolant level alarm, it’s a different tone and that is located on the panel above this photo.

It’s now always on with the ignition even with the engine not started.

Is there another common alarm people might install I’ve not come across? Why would someone have wanted to muffle it?!

Is the sound constant or a beeping?

Impossible to guess I think your only way is to get it out and trace the wiring to see where it goes.

Does it make a beep when the door is open and key in ignition or beep in reverse? Could be a short somewhere that’s causing the ‘normal’ beeper to stay on constantly. Alternatively it could be an entirely separate beeper.

Yeah I figured unless it was a typical regularly purchased alarm (like the coolant one) I would end up tracing the wires. Goodness knows where to start on that!

It's not related to the doors or reverse. I get all those normal beeps. This is constantly on now whenever the ignition is on, you can faintly hear it when driving over the noise of the engine.

Ha ha, if everything else works okay I'd just snip the wire and insulate the feed. Can always re connect if required

It turns out it was the low coolant alarm. For some reason it was giving a false signal and then when I pressed the test button it got louder. The alarm was not a type I recognised so it’s been removed and a Haydn alarm fitted.

The noise has gone!
