2.5td rattle from engine, stops when turning steering.

Morning all,
Among the many little jobs to sort, I've noticed a rattle from the motor.
Only apparent after about 5 mins from starting, but it stops as soon as I turn the steering wheel.
Turn it left or right slightly, and it comes and goes in time with the steering.
Really difficult to determine exactly where it's coming from.
Any ideas?

Check the level of your power steering fluid and go from there....report back

Hi, thanks for your reply.
Fluid level is fine, although the rack has a leak from the top seal, which I’ve just ordered.
It’s deffo a mechanical rattle , just difficult to establish where exactly it originates.

Must be something to do with the steering rack.

Ok, so I've just driven my other, beloved Bongo, and thought....I wonder if this one makes the same noise.....
It would appear that it does.
Anyone else care to have a listen to their own please?
I did record the sound on my iPhone, but I'm jot yet clear on how to upload it.

It is most noticeable at idle and slightly above.

Maybe worth checking the belt and pulleys that drive the power steering pump. Perhaps they are worn and the increased load when steering ‘hides’ the rattle?

The WLTD PSP is gear driven no belt.Depending on the noise it could be various things /low pressure/worn blades / plunger spring/gunge etc.

Hi, yep took a look today. Clearly driven internally, directly from the crank?
Motor is sweet, other than this annoying little rattle.
When you mention pressure, do you mean engine oil pressure?

Turning the steering increases load on engine and may drop its rpm slightly. This might be all that is needed to stop - for example- noises like a squeaky fanbelt. I had a rattle/squeak on cold mornings especially on low tickover only for the first 5-10 mins of running and it was cured finally by adjusting the fanbelt. I'm not saying thats your problem but its possible an rpm change could be linked, and my fanbelt noise sounded more like a bearing than a belt

No the PSP pressure.
