Engine won’t cut off

Hi just got a 97 bongo and on it’s second outing it’s engine won’t shut off even when the keys are out. Also there’s a high pitched beeping sound which sounds likes the lights are on warning but lights are definitely off. Could it be the solenoid? Also would the colder weather be screwing with it? as it was fine when it was milder weather..if it is the solenoid is this an expensive job..

I would think there is a fuel shut off solenoid on or near the fuel pump.

Could be some moisture has got to it and frozen, so I wouldn't think it's a dear job. Even replacing it should be fairly straightforward.

So it doesn’t turn off if I have the brake on first then try to turn it off but does if I turn it off then put handbrake on..is that right?? fairly new to bongos and automatics but sounds strange to me..

The usual cause of these problems is a faulty fuel cut-off valve;

as above, it sounds like its not fully shutting off, often caused by the return spring having failed or become weak.

It is usually the Fuel Stop Solenoid that caused this type of fault, but looking at your reply re the handbrake it is possible that the vehicle Might be fitted with a Turbo Timer of some sort.

Does it eventually switch of by itself after around 10 minutes? Does the beeping start as soon as you turn the key off ? If so then its likley to be a turbo timer. There would normally be a little unit fitted by your knees?

HI yes there is a small black box that is near my knees. it was switched off but when I put it on it has s 1-5 scale?? The beeping does start when it’s turned off..

How does this operate? and is it faulty or should I be doing something?

The idea is that it keeps the engine running for a time after you switch off in order for the turbo to spool down.

The time period can be set, hence the 1-5 scale.

If switching off immediately after the engine has been working hard the turbo can be damaged, but you can just sit and let it idle for a couple of minutes before switching off after, say, leaving the motorway, climbing a good hill or towing.

Bear in mind if you decide to use it it's an offence to leave the engine running when the vehicle is unatended.
