Upgrading Tailgate Struts

Post by paulmitchelltv » Mon Aug 14, 2017 3:58 pm

Since installing our Thule bike carrier, the tailgate doesn't stay up. I don't need it to stay up with bikes on (as that would be slightly daft) but as its our daily vehicle, I do need the tailgate to stay open without bikes on it.

Anyone had any experience of upgrading the gas struts to handle the extra weight?

thanks,
Paul

I too have a Thule carrier and bought new struts from SGS engineering, http://www.sgs-engineering.com I gave them the part number of the originals and that I wanted new struts that would cope the the weight of the rack. They can also re gas your existing struts to a higher pressure if the seals are up to it. Many others on here have used them with positive reports. I also bought new roof struts from them.

Does anyone have the details on the force needed (Newtons) on the upgraded struts to work with a Thule bike carrier? I'm struggling to find what the original were and what force I need for a quote from SGS.
