Post by wassell99 » Wed Oct 25, 2006 9:23 am

I hope someone can help.
Driving around keswick trying to park I noticed a burning smell then a fine white smoke coming from the gear box in the van, this was acompanied by a burning smell outside. The smoke inside disapated as I got the van moving but there was still a smell outside when I got her home.
Can anyone help as I am conceerned about bertha's health :(

Cheers
Shads

Does it smell like burnt toast? There's a lot of discussion reference the gear box and the ATF. Type "Gearbox" into the Search facility and there's loads of info on the subject. The dipstick for the ATF fluid is under the drivers seat.

Was it definitely smoke, not steam?

I thought it might be steam - the leaking water can steam when it hits a hot surface such as the manifold. The burnt smell is usually anti-freeze.

The coolant bleeding is a bit of a palaver isn't it? Has everbody in bongo fury got asbestos hands?... except me? how do you keep from scalding your fingers when replacing the bung in the end of the bleed pipe? it took me 20 minutes to get the bung fully back in the hole! ( fnarr fnarr!)
