Shudder under Acceleration

Post by Beerinthebongo » Wed May 03, 2017 10:12 pm

Hi. My 4wd 2.5 Diesel Bongo has started to shudder, quite heavily, under acceleration. It is worse under load I.e up hills or with weight in the van. There is also a clunk when moving forward after reversing.
Any help would be great fully received.

This sounds similar to some of the issues I am having with my Bongo. See my recent post in techie. I have lots of shudder/ vibration at speeds >30mph. I have also noted the 'clunk' when going from forward to reverse and vice versa.

Booked into garage Monday. Will keep you posted.

the clunk in a 4 wheel drive is usually the front propshaft splines, (transfer box end). if you jack all four wheels off the ground, or even just the front 2 then try to turn one of the front wheels backwards and forwards several times you will hear it, you can grab the front prop and twist quite quickly to get the same result. most 4 w drive do it, it just old age. the universal joint on the rear shaft can also wear badly.

Sounds like a problem I had in the past when one of the universal joints on the prop shaft at the back diff went. Suprising how quick it can develope into a significant fault with little indication it on its way out. That caused same symptoms as being described here.

its just the luck of the draw i suppose, or its already been replaced #-o , you could maybe remove the front prop and grease the splines. mine did it for over 8 years of enthusiastic driving, but it never gave up. if you swap the prop over your still left with the worn receiver spline gear so it turns into a big job to swap that over.

top tip if your changing oils in the diffs or transfer box, check the little breathers on the top of each unit are clear and free, they have a habit of rusting shut, or being sealed shut by over enthusiastic under sealing peeps. if you grab it and try to turn them they should rotate and lift a little, most are stuck and overlooked, then the oil cannot breathe when hot and seals can weep.

So it's all fixed! The hardy spicer on the rear propshaft was totally shot. Must've been like that the whole time I've owned the van. It drives like a dream now. Thanks for the replies. G.

I think I know the answer to this one - I was sponsored by GKN as a student!!
Hardy pretty much invented the Constant Velocity Universal Joint. Joined forces with a gentleman called Spicer (American??). Lots of mergers etc. but been part of GKN for yonks. The popularity of front wheel drive created huge demand for CV joints. Back in the 70s probably the only UK supplier and now still hold a substantial chunk of the worldwide market, maybe a third.

Or, just for Bill, its a Bongonaught who adds chilli, curry, and other flavoursome, plant derived, food addatives to a recipe while cooking outdoors in bad weather.
