ARE INSURANCE COMPANIES TAKING THE P*** OR IS IT BREXIT ?

well my annual renewal has arrived as expected but the increase was not. They have hiked it up another £90 from last year I mean I am 60 something, 9 yrs no claims unprotected, 12.000 miles no other drivers, no claims accidents or convictions. Now they are asking £348. they also have increased the voluntary excess to £400 from £240 I rang them and they knocked a tenner off.

Has anyone out there had a good deal lately ?I had one from a comparison site last week £219 but when I rang them up they kept putting me on hold, Then they came back after about ten minutes and asked me why it had 8 seats ?? I told him it was made like that and he put me on hold again. By then I had lost the will to live so I hung up.

I tried the one advertised on the forum and they wanted £420? 2Gether wanted £400 last year so it's no good asking them again

Surely someone out there must be able to insure a 14 yr old van for a reasonable fee.

Any ideas pls ?

I've always thought insurance is expensive.

i hate this sort of thing as much as the next chap, but,
if i was an insurance company insuring so many possible occupants in a motor that that may or may not be easy to get major body panels .parts etc now its past the 10 year parts stocked by the manufacturer limit i would maybe consider it ok.

but then.
i recently looked at a new vw caddy, fully loaded top spec, all the toys, when i rang my existing insurer for a swap over price i nearly fell off my chair.so newer isnt always the way to go.

it just seems there is no consistency, which is the annoying bit.

Agree with you Adey. Had a nightmare with my insurance as well. Usually insurance companies are no problem. Sedate job, quiet postcode. Aged past boy racer but before senility. Today, taking the piss summed it up. Keeping the Bongo but adding a VW Beetle. On past experience no problem. Ones a car the others a camper on a specialist motorhome policy. I expected Mirrored NCD, full 10 yrs +. Reasonable quote, all sorted. No way. In the past no one minded my 4ltr Range Rover. Ragtop Jeep Wrangler second car no problem. Never claimed on either or the Bongo.

This time the NCB is locked on the Bongo. Recommended by Camping & Caravan club who insure the Bongo to get a quote on zero NCB. All came through from the sort of companies that insure new drivers with very basic cover or horribly expensive, most both.

Finally I sorted it out via a specialist broker, but will not be doing that again in a hurry. No surprise how many are priced out of insurance, or don't bother.

Ok the VW is a silly car with a high insurance group, but I have owned far worse. The number of companies that quoted but when contacted offered something totally different was scary. ADMIRAL MULTI CAR gave a quote on the website, but then refused the Bongo. It would have been so easy to buy not valid insurance.

Just purchased a caravan to go with the Bongo then I hear they are going to hike up insurance for over 60s ffs

I am so glad the bongo is on petrol/gas as it seems they are going to hammmer diesel owners whatever their age!

Is camping and caravaning coming to an end as no longer affordable ?

No. Camping and caravan club ate still very affordable for my converted Bongo. 321 Away rear conversion on a V6. The problem was that it is on a car policy, not a proper motorhome policy as I thought. The car policy leaves my NCB unavailable unlike a motorhome policy which leaves it free to use on a car.

Insuring a class 17 vehicle without a available NCD is nightmarish. I did it through a broker who linked the two policies using the same insurance company that C&C use for the Bongo. It came out as half the price that C&C quoted for same car and company. Next renewal the Bongo moves to to a Classic car policy that will free the NCD. All horribly complicated. At one point I thought I might have to go back tail between legs and swap my new toy for something calmer.

Most people never face this as one of a couple insures a car and the other insures the Bongo. Two separate policies in different names. My neighbour does this. He still pays more for his Bongo though. But an awful lot less for the car. If I was still using the Bongo as my only vehicle no problem. Another part is so many policies are tailored to comparison sites it is harder to sort any thing out of the ordinary.

I have had a multi car insurance with Admiral, which has gone from 1185 last year to 2055 this year - with no changes! They can't explain it other than weasel words, so currently thinking of splitting back to 3 separate policies.
Can't wait to retire to sell a car and simplify it all.
Admiral happy to insure our 1995 Bongo for now, but they quoted over £600 for the Bongo component. Everything has gone up.

Might understand if it went fast enough to do someone an injury!

Trouble is 2 tons, even moving slowly (115 mph) can do a lot of damage.

We all need to shop around every year.

I'm no lover of insurance companies, but that's how it is.

No its money grabbing, pure and simple. Get a few quotes from other sources and start quoting them at your current one, they drop rapidly.

Admiral multi-car works out far more expensive than having individual policies for me, they are a rip off.

Welcome to the Bongo mad-house.

Your premium sounds much like ours, on a 2001 V6. Can't recall who with though... I'm happy enough with that, by the sounds of some of the stories above, it could be much worse!
