On both rear corners of my bongo there are what appear to be reversing sensors and somewhere in the van there is a beeper (one of many!) When I select reverse the beeper operates immediately and continues to beep even when therre is nowt behind me - does mean that A - the sensors are duff or B - they're not actually sensors at all......?

This feature is common to these vehicles, it lets you know that you have selected reverse gear, not reversing sensor as you know it Jim.

The original reversing sensors have one on each rear corner, two at the rear central and one nearside front. The displays are central on the dashboard are at the front centre of the vehicle and also a rear one visible in the reversing mirror. If its not that configuration then its probably a 3rd party add on.
