Replacing Suspension Springs

Post by sdemmery » Thu Oct 19, 2006 11:44 pm

Hi All,
My Bongo is currently lowered & I wish to change the springs back to the standard ones. Does anyone have any tips or experience with replacing the springs? Do I need a spring compressor? I guess the current smaller springs, may be easier to remove than fitting the new longer ones.

Any advice anyone?

Thanks White Man Van, Ive managed to borrow some Spring Compressors. Going to attempt the spring change on Monday along with an Oil & full filter change. Oh & fix the damn air con fan which is not working, probably the well know resistor problem.

Hope the spring change is not too complex, Im pretty handy with cars & my dad has been building cars & repairing them all his life so hopefully we should be able to suss it out between us.

A full day of Bongo repairs

Thanks Again

I'd like to know why you are reverting to the originals as I am looking to reduce the body roll of My recently bought Bongo and was considering shorter springs or spring clamps as an option. really I'm open to any suggestions for improving the handling. I do realise that as Scotty probably never said" you cannae change the laws of physics Captain" but I wouid like to reduce the body roll. -any sugggestions as to the best /cost effective solution.

Damn Speed Humps!

Post by sdemmery » Thu Oct 26, 2006 8:05 pm

Hi John,
I use my bongo to get to work everyday & have to navigate lots of speed humps, every one no mater how I tried scraped the plastic engine cover & if Im honest the ride was not that confortable.

That said, there was Zero Roll & I really do me Zero (well as Zero as a Bongo can be  ) it held the road very very well. Oh and looked really cool!

I must say it dont look so cool anymore but needs must Im afraid.

I did the spring change myself, it is essential to have 2 spring compressors & a lots of time & patience oh & lots of WD40 the nuts on the track rods were really stuck.

Took me around 8 hours to do the job but I was hampered by round nuts  on my wheels.

I sold the springs to Dorset Dave (nice bloke with a real nice Tin Top) , delivered them to him today in fact. Hope you manage to keep those compressors on the springs Dave!

Cheers

john are you running on jap tyres?if you are fit a quality european tyre and you should notice a considerable difference, clamping springs may be quick and cheap but wont improve handling vastly as you will lose the progression of the spring as it is put under more load on poor/windy roads and comfort will suffer
