I've read the fact sheet and helping a friend on holiday in Ireland so I can't try things hands on and never been there myself. Also the 2002 model seems to differ slightly from the 1996 vintage in this area. So I would really appreciate a little confirmation on the steps for reading and clearing fault code(s) on a 2002 Diesel?
To read:
End journey with coil light flashing (even on-off flashes)
Turn ignition off
Put in link wire as per fact sheet or one of Geoff's pics.
Turn ignition on
Observe flash pattern on dashboard glow plug light
The fault only comes on when the engine is warm so does this check have to be done immediately after a warm run or at any time?
To clear:
Ignition off
Link wire - does it matter if this is removed or not?
Disconnect SB and LB battery earths
Press brake - 20 secs
Reconnect batteries
Read diagnostics as above to check cleared.
Even though the glow plug light only flashes when the engine is warm, is it necessary to clear the fault from the ECU?
Thanks

Re: Reading and clearing ECU fault codes
Not quite answering your question but this may help...
We've a switch on our Bongo that puts a resistor in parallel to the temperature dependent resistor that switches the scavenger fan on.
When operated (which I do when the engine is hot) it causes the glow plug light to flash evenly.
It might be your friends temperature dependent resistor has given up / has less resistance than it should as the temperature rises / is working normally but the engine is getting unusually hot - can the scavenger fan be heard working when the light flashes and the engine is warm?
As for clearing fault codes, disconnecting the earths and draining any residual power works on our year 2000 diesel although I wonder if you can simply remove fuse 9 which is the ECU fuse rather than disconnect the earths.

Re: Reading and clearing ECU fault codes
Faults need to be read whilst the light is flashing, if the fault clears when you switch off / cool down it won't be possible to retrieve it afterwards.
To clear the ECU then you need to remove both power feeds, turning OFF the ignition removes the main feed but there is also a backup supply via the top left fuse by the drivers knee or you can disconnect both batteries (if leisure battery is fitted) for a few seconds.

So is it best put the link into the diagnostic port while the engine is running with the glowplug light flashing?g8dhe wrote:Faults need to be read whilst the light is flashing, if the fault clears when you switch off / cool down it won't be possible to retrieve it afterwards.

Re: Reading and clearing ECU fault codes
when / if you dont get a sensible answer from bongo take off the egr valve and clean it out then try again, if that doesnt work remove the egr position sensor off the top of it and strip and clean and lube it that should sort it. seems to be a hard to find issue with this age of bongo.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.Northern Bongolow wrote:when / if you dont get a sensible answer from bongo take off the egr valve and clean it out then try again, if that doesnt work remove the egr position sensor off the top of it and strip and clean and lube it that should sort it. seems to be a hard to find issue with this age of bongo.
