Before I start tugging away at it, am I right in
thinking the drivers plastic door step just pulls
out (no screws or similar holding it in place).

I remember similar query when I took mine up and have a distant (and doubtful) memory of removing a screw or scrivet at one of its ends at the top but definitely it was clips along the its length.
