Aircon problem

Spotted something dangling and found out it was the Aircon belt shredded.
Had a spare so fitted it in a pub car park.
Fired up switched aircon on. Screeech.
Compressor not turning presume Kapput?
Ordered new set of belts.
What you reckon next ?

sounds like the clutch on the front of the compressor baz, im not sure which way round it works but i would try to spin it with the engine not running, im thinking it should spin free until the switch is on then this locks the clutch then drives the compressor, if you speak to george he will tell you. if its knacked get one from george then get the aircon guys to swap it over then charge the system.
