Driver side door electrical problem mystery

Post by neilrenault » Mon May 30, 2016 1:36 pm

Hi

I recently bought a 1996 Bongo Friendee. I've noticed a few weird electrical issues related to the drivers side door which I was wondering if these could be linked....

(1) Right side window switch - Does not work to move driver/passenger window up. Passenger window switch works on passenger side however. Interestingly the driver window locking on/off does work to control the left side window.
--> Have bought a new window switch and tried that. Does not fix the problem.

(2) Right side wing mirror does not fold in - The wing mirror on the right side does not fold inwards when the button is pressed (left side does). However I can tilt the right mirror using the switch, just not fold it in.
--> Have tried replacing the wing mirror with a new part and this does not solve the problem.

(3) Right side speaker does not work - Speaker on left side does however. Wiring to speaker looks ok.

Anybody got any suggestion of why certain electrical things work and certain don't. I'd like to think its an issue with specific wires and is related. Fuses look good otherwise and if any of them were out anyway the left side wouldn't work.

Many Thanks :D

A very common cause of symptoms you describe is the loom failing where it passes from the A pillar into the door.

If you strip off the insulation you will likely see broken wires or it will be obvious where they have 'Work Hardened' and failed within the inner insulation.

Simple fix to solder in a short piece of wire or replacement looms can be bought.
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.
