Cam Belt

Whilst travelling down the M6 at 70ish mph in the 3rd lane (true honestly), I lost power and managed to coast to the hard shoulder. To cut a long story short I was recovered home and the mechanic fetched it to the garage the next day. I was informed my cam belt had broken. Is anybody able to tell me if my engine is likely to be 'foobar' and the likely cost of repairing/replacing it ? I have a 2005 Aero City Runner auto 2.0ltr petrol.

A few years ago we had a AFT 2.0 which we took in part exchange, it had a new cambelt supposedly the year before from a well known campervan conversion centre, the belt let go when we sold it on on stripping it hadn't been replaced, the head had to come off and I think two valves needed to be replaced. The FE engine is an interference engine, if you get away with it you were just lucky.

Well it's been a couple of weeks and my apologies for not posting a reply sooner. Bongo is all good with no damage to engine and cam belt replaced. So if you have a 2ltr bongo and your cam belt goes it won't damage the engine and will just need replacing, however when your mechanic does it make sure he sets it to No.2. Apparently there are 4 settings, whatever this means !! Basically won't start if set to 1,3 or 4 and saves the mechanic from taking it on and off each time. If you are ever in South Cumbria and break down then Google Yewbarrow Garage in Grange over Sands and he will come and fetch you and hopefully fix broken Bongo. Best garage in South Lakes by far and I use them frequently to fix my Fourtak.

Unlike the diesels .... both the 2.0 and 2.5 Petrol engines are Non-Interference fit engines so the pistons should not smack into the valves if the cam belt goes ..

Mike Walsall, above, says it's non-interference.
And welcome to BF.

Thanks for the little gem about fitting to settings on No 2 cyclinder, also maybe Yewbarrow Garage in Grange over Sands should be added to the 'good garages' list if they are not already recorded there.
