Shaking after cv boot replaced

Post by thingswelike » Mon Oct 16, 2006 2:30 pm

Hi all
My van has been smooth as a whistle since I got my wheels balanced about 12 months ago until...

A cv boot failed it's MOT and as soon as it was replaced, the whole van has started shaking fairly violently at 60+ mph (although you can feel it lower if you're looking for it).
This seems different to the original wobble, as this time the whole van shakes (before it was just the steering wheel) and before it would come and go at different speeds - now it just gets progressively worse (up to 85mph tested).

I want to get the wheels balanced, but it's come back just the same (previously the same garage had balanced them and cured the initial problem).

So...
Is this something to do with the aftermarket alloys?

I'll be taking it back to the gargage which fitted the cv boot tomorrow, so any info would be great.

Cheers
Alex

Have they tightened everything up? Knocked the steering alignment out? Do your aftermarket alloys require spacers? If so has one not been replaced?

I'll ask about the spacers - it sounds like just the thing that could have been missed.
The tracking (is that the same as steering alignment) is out by 4mm - but that didn't sound like a lot to me.

Yes that's the same. It should be bang on but no I wouldn't expect out of alignment to create such a noise as you describe.
