It is a 2005 2 litre petrol it came with a new cam belt service etc
Is it normal for it to smell like a new part burning and does the fan usually come on in winter on short journeys we know nothing about engines etc so any advice is welcome

welcome to the bongo world of fun. 8) 8) .
the 2 ltr does seem to run cool so fans on in winter on short journeys could require investigating. firstly, the same fans are used on the aircon system, so is the aircon on or off.

i was thinking the burning smell maybe the smell of the dirty aircon matrix that needs cleaning out, or the fan motor struggling on the heater system.

Bobnwen ,did the vehicle have any work done to it prior to your collection ,IE welding undersealing or under painting new exhaust system etc., and is it possible that the air condition button was accidently switch to the on position.

Regarding the running cool of this type of vehicles I don't really understand why as it uses a std 88 degree Celsius thermostat.

Good Luck

Welcome aboard.

If you pop a rough location in your profile someone nearby might offer to sit with you for a spin round the block and give a view.

The smell could be under seal on the exhaust

My 2.0l has various smells, you get used to them, 3 years in no problems. Today it ran cool with temp gauge at 1/4 all day. usually it's at 11 o'clock all the time but it was cold today. I don't worry about it. Fans don't run much though!

Bear in mind that the two radiator fans come on with the airconditioning so if you are demisting the windscreen may hear the rad fans too. There is also a fan in front of the engine called a scavenger fan. That would normally only come on when the temperature around the engine gets too hot. The sensor is close to the handbrake under the centre console.
