Pela pump when engine running?

Hi all,
Cold measuring the ATF shows it to be a little too full.
If, when I measure it when the engine is running and it still shows to be too full, can I remove oil with a Pela whilst still leaving the engine on or is it a case of turning the engine off and on whilst the level is adjusted.
I don't want to mangle the Pela pumps pipe or the Bongos auto box for that matter.

On a diesel autobox (don't know about the others) a good approximation when cold and engine stopped is for the level to be on the twisted bit of the dipstick (much higher than the standard reading)

The gear box/engine needs to be Hot. Engine running at recommender tick over (RPM) speed and the dip stick completely dry, insert the dipstick into the tube and out as quick as possible.

Some times there can be fluid in the tube.

If you are in doubt the best thing to do is when Cold check the level it should be the Lower mark, if too high remove as required.

Take the vehicle for a good run until at running temperature, check level with engine running (as above) and in Park top up to the High/Hot mark.

But personally, I wouldn't put the Pela probe in while engine running, or at least not any more than the length of the gearbox dipstick.

I assume that Mazda have specified an engine. running method as the cold method lacks accuracy.

It's fairly normal to check ATF when it's up to operating temperature. On my V6 there is a cold mark as well as min/max for when up to correct temperature:

I've seen the 2 marks on quite a few dipsticks Simon, not just the V6. Certainly makes a regular check of the gearbox fluid a quicker job.
