Help - Our Bongo died!

Post by ramblinman » Tue Nov 17, 2015 8:15 pm

On Thursday night I was driving up to Yorkshire for a long weekend on the moors. Four miles from home the Bongo suddenly died on me and I managed to coast over to the side of the road. Nothing happened when I tried to start her again (although glow plug lights came on as usual) so I sat and waited to be rescued. I had my lights and hazards on due to busy city traffic. After about 15 mins these faded and I was just left with a clicking / ticking noise coming from under the bonnet.

Rescue guy was stumped as to what was wrong. He initially thought that I had run out of fuel as he said that fuel was not being delivered (we have a faulty fuel gauge but I know it had fuel as confirmed later by my garage). He could not get the engine to turn over, think he said he was using easy start and had something connected to the battery. In the end it was put on the back of a truck and taken to my local garage.

Now after two days with our mechanic he is also totally stumped what is wrong with it. He initially also thought that it was the alternator or we had run out of fuel but it is not that. He's checking everything methodically but has asked if I could pose a question on here (he's not an internet type of guy) for anything to look out for. Over the 7 years we have had the Bongo he has done a great job at sorting out bits and bobs on it and is now suitably frustrated.

Any pointers for him would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

James

Diesel or petrol?

Did any lights on the dash come on just before it stopped?
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

glow plug lights bob so its a diesel.

did the ignition lights stay on, if so it sounds like battery, alternator, or fuel shut off electric switch on the top of the pump. if battery is low it may have shut. 24-3002 on here.

Hi yes the ignition lights stayed on initially but they soon faded along with lights. I will ask him to check the fuel shut off electric switch on the top of the pump and print out the diagram.

Cheers

I would say that a fully charged battery should not go flat in 15 minutes under normal conditions with hazards and lights on. So, I would start by getting the battery fully charged and then, if you can get the engine running, check the alternator output.

Are you getting fuel at the injectors? Loosen one of the pipes and turn the engine over on the starter. If there's nothing at all, I would suggest checking the fuel shut off solenoid on the injector pump as these have been known to fail open or closed.

When was the cambelt last replaced? It's always possible that it has skipped a tooth or even snapped.
