Any Oil Experts?

Post by Bob » Fri Jul 17, 2015 3:57 pm

Our Ferdinand is due for his intermediate oil change.

In the garage I have 4 ltrs of Castrol GTX 10w40 and 2 ltrs of the same 15w40.

I wouldn't normally consider mixing oils, but from the same manufacturer what do we recon?

This would get 2 cans out of the way and mean I don't have to spend anything right now.

Not worth risking damage to the engine to save a small bit, though.

I cannot imagine this doing any harm. In fact I suspect that as oil in the engine ages, its 'W' values probably changes anyway as a result of polymer fatigue (or whatever the right term is). If you don't want it, I'll have it off you when we next meet up  But seriously, bung in it. Life and Bongos are about adventure and experimentation eh? 8)

 It won't go to waste, Mike.

Just a case of buying another 4 ltrs of each and using one then tother, but it would be handy to have it out the garage. :D

Thanks for your kind offer, though. :D

5w 30 is the proper oil for your diesel, 10w 40 is thicker when cold, 15w 40 is prob too thick for cold starts in winter, mind you you are daarn saarf.
the main thing with oil is can it be used on an egr engine, if it blanked then no problem, if not blanked use egr oil. not sure if yours has been done mate or if either of your oils is made for egr engines.
