Aircon ... is it front only or dual?

Hi all,

Probably a stupid question but .....

I have an original (un-modernised) 1995 2WD Bongo ..... just about to get the aircon serviced.

In the very helpful factsheet in the members are it says; "Re-gas system using R134a. The system will take approximately 950g (for dual system) or 700g (front system only)."

So, mine has a front and rear blower panel with a switch on the dash to turn on/off the rear set ... but is the aircon separate or is it "dual"?

It obviously makes a difference to the amount of gas which needs to be replaced.

Apologies if this has been asked elsewhere.

Thanks for any help.

Tony.

As standard its always "dual" but in some conversions or following leaks some people have bypassed the rear system to make it front only. You would have to check the piping underneath to see if the rear has been bypassed.

For the first time in 4 years of Bongo ownership I've finally got round to seriously considering having my aircon checked out and re-gassed. It has a JAL rear conversion so no rear heater controls etc. I bypassed the rear heater matrix following a leak at the matrix last year but have never touched any AC pipework. Might be a stupid question as I know nowt about aircon but would I need to regas on the basis of front or dual and do I need to do anything with any aircon pipes ?

I've also been trying to find info on hear on how to check the AC compressor is working - I recall something about shorting or bypassing connections but can't find the thread.

Cheers

Jim

Unless the A/C has been blanked at the rear (v. unlikely) then it will need to be regassed on the basis of being dual system. I've blanked mine and the place I went to for regas has the info on his database about correct capacity for single and dual systems. If the A/C doesn't work, be wary of bypassing the pressure sensor on the dryer unit as the pump is easily ruined if run without lubrication.

That probably because the original purchaser of the vehicles opted pay to have them fitted.

The whole rear heater unit was an option, but seems to have been fitted across the overwhelming majority of vehicles.

Another pretty much 'standard' option is the power folding mirrors but there are still one or two vans knocking around without the extra switch and motors.
