2.0 Strange sound

Post by Bvan » Thu May 14, 2015 12:18 am

Hi all, my Bongo makes a strange " tinkling" sound around 3500 revs. Doesn't sound nasty and disappears as revs rise. Anyone any ideas?

tinkling sound could be crankshaft pulley.

this may help a little, its a diesel but it maybe the same set up.

they also have a twin walled exhaust manifold, the first bit, this can get holed on the inner, this then echos out to the outer skin, this can make wierd noises, maybe this is what your hearing.some have cut off the outer, then welded it up then refit the skin back on.

My old T4 had a similar thing once. Everyone said it was damper pulley breaking up. Bought pulley took to independent VW garage, they pinpointed badly adjusted damper. I asked them to swap pulley anyhow then watched as they manually adjusted timing with engine running whilst monitoring with laptop. V impressed!
