Fuel gauge again?

Post by Cab-ova pete » Sun May 03, 2015 4:27 pm

Hi all, I have a question, how much £s does a tank on a 97 2.5 to 4x4 hold? My gauge was reading as good as empty so I put some diesel in,£51 and it was coming out of cap! I have watched the gauge move from half tank to empty after I cleaned the sender unit and it has been fine! No jumping up and down on gauge. Since I put fuel in on Friday the gauge seems to be all over the place? 3/4 tank after bubbling out of filler cap, 60 miles later(yesterday) it's reading just under half and today it's reading just under 3/4? It seems to mess up everytime I put fuel in? Your help is much appreciated

I believe the capacity is around 65 litres. Difficult to equate that to cost as it depends how much fuel is in your area. At 120p/l it should cost £78 to fill it from empty.

Unless the earthing is good on them they can read all over the pace.
I have seen one that had a bad earth in the actual sender unit so had to cave a cable fitted in the tank to earth the top of the sender to the bottom, worked perfect after that

Hi Simon, that helps, well my Sunday pm maths are calculating at £1.20/ltr which means I have put 43ish Ltrs?? I will have to see how the needle moves? Thanks for that simon #-o that's also interesting aswell winch man, I have earthed the tank to the chassis a few weeks ago and after that not working I cleaned the s unit and thaughts it solved but I've relied on it til a rough start Friday on empty on gauge and like I said as soon as I put fuel in it went all over the gauge?

If you take the sender out and measure the resistance as you move the float you may see its too high.
Heres a picture of what I did to solve it.

Basically I had added another earth to the actual sender variable resistor in the tank
