Engine Flush on 1996 Diesel

Hi all, I have a very noisy engine, very tappy and chuggy. I've done some research and what keeps coming up is the Tappetts/rods need a good clean hence the engine flush.
Has anyone in here had experience of this, am i on the right path or is this a common fault.
Your help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks
Jay

check that there is no wear in the rocker posts....I had a couple of broken fingers due to this .

I've used engine flush on a vehicle before and it made it worse by messing up the oil in the hydraulic lifters. The Bongo diesel engine has old fashioned rocker arms and I don't think any amount of magic oil treatment is going to help with worn parts or incorrectly adjusted valve clearances. I think you need to get your socket set and feeler gauge out to investigate this one.

Wow thanks for all the suggestion,
I'll upload a recording of it here. I love my Bongo (Frank) needs some TLC but i'm determined to get there
Thanks Again

I just had to have a new head fitted. One nice spin-off was that the engine is now much quieter now that I have a head with freshly adjusted rappers.

Hi Jay, it would be worthwhile removing the rocker cover and giving the Cam Shaft a good examination, these old oil burners can suffer from fractured (broken ) cam shafts this would cause it to be both noisy and erratic(chuggy). Also make sure that the valve gear is getting a good drink, if all ok adjust the valve clearance.
Good Luck.

Hiya, thanks again for all the replies,
Well after long deliberation, and some expert advice. It seems that the engines on the 1996 diesel are naturally noisy buggers!!
However, a tappet adjustment was advised, i have my gauges ready but i'm unsure of the measurements and also if the tappets should be adjusted warm or cold?
Any help on this would a be a boon!
Thanks Again
J

Tappets are set cold ..
Inlet ... 0.1 mm (0.05 mm +/- tolerance)
Exhaust 0.2 mm (0.05mm +/- tolerance)
