hi, anyone got an ingenious idea how 2 fit a mk1 terzo rear ladder (where you remove the left hand horizontal handle on the rear door) on a 2002 rear door (no handles)

You can't :). You can fit late style ladder to earlier tailgate with handles, but not handle-mounted type to later style tailgate.

The later style clamp over the bottom of the tailgate:

Rivnuts may be safer than self tappers.

Into plastic trim panel with light fittings? Fine as long as never used to to climb on or the tailgate is never slammed shut

The facelift tailgates are different under the trim panels so the only practical solution to fit that ladder to that vehicle would be to swap the whole tailgate.

This is the mounting point for the early ladder:

You need to get the correct ladder. The one you have is shorter that the correct one as can be seen if you compare the length in these two pictures:

I've got two in the shed which are due to be vapour blasted and powder coated back to new condition as i did with this one. However, I've got a few more pressing things to attend to first so it won't be done for a few months yet but I can give you a shout nearer the time if you're still looking.

Please let me know when you've got round to doing up one of those MK2 ladders! Looks fantastic blasted and coated - have just fitted a solar panel so having a ladder on the back could prove useful for keeping it clean etc. Thanks

Are you able to climb up those ladders or are they for show?

Fully functioning & pretty sturdy. On my previous Bongo fitted with the full roof rack I used the ladder to get the awning & contents of roof bag on & off.

While on the current van I use it for the spare wheel when on long journeys.

One of those ladders would be really useful when I want to put surf boards on the roof, but can the roof take a person's weight moving around on top? I would need to get to the front roof bar to tie the boards down. I'm only little, so I don't weigh too much!

I'm relatively light but wouldn't risk getting on the roof. If it were me, I'd get a cheap telescopic ladder like this so you could access this from any side: https://www.buydirect4u.co.uk/product/d ... tAodLgEAdA
