Still whistling

Hi guys,

I've got a slight whistling noise but only when building up speed, can rev up in neutral and drive at a constant speed and its fine. No 8 stud on the manifold was broken so thought it could be that, replaced all the studs and the gasket and I still have the whistle.

Could anyone advise where I should look next

It is possible that the manifold had warped with the heat when not bolted properly due to a broken stud. A few people have had to have the manifold skimmed to rectify the problem. Try looking for a leak round the manifold still!

Do you have roof bars or top box?
Is there an under tray that not secured properly?
Is the exhaust ok I've had some that produce a whistle caused by baffle probs
Is it a diesel could be turbo inter cooler hose not properly tight this causes a whistle

The whistle is ever so slight, but I know its there.

Is there an easy way to test the manifold for warping without taking it all back off again?

No roof bars or box, but I will check some of your suggestions thou.

Not being very good with mechanics I will check the easy stuff first.

A friends Kia had a weird whistle,turned out to be from the power steering pump as the fluid was low.

No 1 Stud is a likely suspect, I read they have all been replaced, but could it still be loose?

Hi Haybal...
I would guess the best way to check that would be to blow smoke at it , or talc round the manifold. Whether it makes a whistle or not, there is a clamp that holds the turbo onto the induction piping that sometimes breaks, I would check the connections, but my GUESS would be the manifold....a fair few members have had the same problem....another tell-tale sign is a bit of blackening round the gasket where the exhaust is leaking. You might do well to get a spare manifold and get it skimmed ready if you do find that's the cause.

Checked No1 stud again seems fine

There was some blackening near where No8 stud had broke, have cleaned all that off now to see if it returns now the studs and gasket have been replaced(no talc at the mo so cant do that test yet). Clamps and pipe connections seem fine and tight around the turbo.

With it being a "new noise" I wanted to find out what it was, that's when I found No8 stud was broken
so I thought this was the cause of the whistle.If it is the turbo and its not doing any damage that's fine, just want to try and eliminate other possible causes.

To hear the sound better, tie the passenger seat back and take it for a spin... I found when my stud disappeared, that the noise got drowned out by normal running noises when I got a bit of speed on , and backed the throttle off to cruise. Again, on my Bongo, you hardly hear the turbo, but it works perfectly, as checked on instruments!
