Bongo Fury

Good afternoon peeps,

Up until 13.00 today my 2.5 diesel has always started on the button, but today when I tried to start her the engine just turned over with no attempt to catch.

The Breakdown man reckons its the fuel pump as he cant smell any fuel? Anyway he couldn`t do anything about it?
So it looks as though its getting towed in tomorrow.

Any suggestions as to what could be the problem?

Which ever you need to find out if the fuel is getting to engine

Check your getting power to the fuel pump solenoid on top of the fuel pump.if you are not sure how to check it on looking into the engine compartment on the top of the pump the solenoid should click when ign turned on or off

Original post says 2.5 diesel

If it's not a fuel delivery problem it will be blowing clouds of unburt fuel out of the exhaust.

It's that time of the year when they definitely won't start with no active glow plugs.

I guess there is plenty of fresh diesel into the tank? When was the fuel filter last changed? You could try some Cold Start sprayed into the air intake which may bring it to life briefly. Otherwise, fuel cut off solenoid does sound like a possible culprit.

Must admit the sudden onset makes you wonder about this possibility. Should be quick to rule it in/out.

Just checked the fuel pump solenoid ( at least I think I did ) and heard click when I turn ign. switch on/off.
Fuel Filter was changed less than year ago.

It's not unknown for glow plugs to pop one by one. It will start OK with 3 operational plugs, it will even start Ok with 2 operational plugs, but these are then likely to go and then it won't start, This is what happened to me this time last year.

The best thing to do is slacken an injector pipe and crank the engine (taking care to protect your eyes etc. If no fuel present remove the Stop Solenoid and make sure it is working, and the rubber seat has not come adrift or disintegrated blocking the fuel supply.

PS are you sure it doesn't need a drink.

It's worth just checking no one has blocked your exhaust with a potato or something.
I say this as our old Bongo always started first time and then wouldn't start at all. I'd reversed into a soft mound of mud, completely blocking the exhaust.

Evening peeps- here is an update.

2nd breakdown man arrived to tow van back to my local dealership 321Away.
Before leaving he had a quick looksee, and sprayed some Cold Start into the air intake.

He tried turning it over a few times and a few more squirts and you have guessed it - nothing hapened.

He was just about to put van on back of low loader when he gave ign. one final turn, and blow me it fired up immediately.

Breakdown HQ informed him/me that if van breaks down again, tough, thats my lot.
So he took van on low loader to 321Away for them to check it out.

Julian at 321, checked fuel pump, removed and checked glowplugs, removed and checked banjo and all was well.

So good news Bongo back on road, bad news, we don`t really know what caused problem in first place.

Top marks to Julian for his time and knowledge, and for the 2nd breakdown man who did get it started.
Perhaps the first one couldn`t be bothered.

I`m now going to carry a can of Cold Start in van.
