Hold illumination

Hi all,
What does HOLD do.....ok I quess it holds?. My illumination has never come on,apart from once whilst driving. Stopped restarted and it has never come on again.

The hold button is on the right hand side of the gear lever .. (if the HOLD light flashes without reason then it indicates a gearbox fault) ..

Loosely speaking it puts the box into a mild ' sports mode' .. but it serves several purposes .. from extra engine braking in ice / hilly conditions .. hangs onto lower gear changes when towing .. extra acceleration .. knocks the 'overdrive off .........
