belt noise

Post by dom_e » Sat Nov 08, 2014 11:01 am

Around a year ago I had the alternator and aircon belts changed since they were making a squishy noise. This succeed the issue. I've recently changed the alternator and am struggling to stop the belts squeaking and chattering a bit when the engine is started (it goes away when warmed up). I keep notching up the tension and have tried the squirt of rubber protector, but it's still noticeable. Before I go over tightening the belts, is there a rough guide to how tight I should make them? I know you can get click testers, but I imagine there's a method that doesn't involve buying more stuff.

Cheers

worth a read

you should be able to twist longest run 90 degrees

or about 1/2 inch deflection on longest run as a rule of thumb

Cheers. I'd noted that thread with interest. I'm hoping it's not going to be that, but it's certainly worth a check.
