RX-8 Steering Wheel Fitting

Post by Mark Elvin » Tue Sep 30, 2014 6:22 am

I've read two differing opinions on whether the RX-8 steering wheel fits straight across or if there are mods required.

Please, can somebody who has actually fitted an RX-8 wheel enlighten me as to what's required, I'm hoping to fit mine in an a short evening this week, but I'll need to make sure I have everything required to hand.

I know the Mazda 6 wheel fits but requires modification to the plastic collar that cancels the indicator. You need to get the collar that fits the Bongo switches as well as one that fits the wheel & then effectively chop them in half & join them together. You also have to deal with the wiring for the horn & airbag (if fitted). Ideally you need to get the wheel, indicator switches & clockspring / squib unit (with output plugs & wiring) from a donor vehicle so you have all the parts required. The M6 wheel also has twin airbags vs. the single Bongo version. Whether RX8 is the same, I'm not sure.

RX8 wheel is an easy fit option.

Fastest way is to leave the bongo squib as is and modify the rear of the RX8 wheel to the Bongo indicator cancelling prongs.

Basically the Bongo wheel has cut outs on the rear at the 12-6 o'clock positions whereas the RX8 ones are at 3-9 oclock.

Best option is to drill the rear of the RX8 wheel (its soft ally) and leave the Bongo squib as is.
Then you can refit he Bongo wheel easily without issue.

Airbag, if you have one fitted, you can disconnect and then add a small resistor which will stop the lights from flashing - about 50p from Maplins.
