dipstick.

Post by zippy » Sun Aug 03, 2014 4:46 pm

The dipstick wants to twist itself and it's near impossible to get a oil level off the bugger.

There is a machined kink near the bottom to help hold it in? seems odd, but drags up oil, and neither side will give a good oil level.

Any tips?

Thanks

If you check the level when cold it's usually pretty obvious where the level is. It it's a diesel then the oil is usually darker than the petrol engine which also helps.

when you pull it out you get a smear on one side and it all on the other, there no definitive line. I'll post pics tomorrow.

Think i might have over filled it, so I'm gonna do filter and a full oil drop.

If you are finding it hard to get the correct mark on the dip stick, completely Dry the stick and give it a coating of chalk well above the Full mark.

I assume this is to make it obvious if the oil hits the chalk mark, but if it is well above the full mark then its not going to help unless you have put too much in.

But if the oil hits the chalk then dont you get chalk in the oil ?- which does not sound like a good idea to me.

If you are worries about getting oil on the chalk you could always use OFP, its a wee bit more expensive but it should put your mind to rest.

Watch overfilling with oil can have the same effect as water/coolant in the cylinder chamber - hydraulic = piston/con rod damage

You'd have to seriously overfill an engine to get hydraulic lock. The lock would be in the bottom end rather than combustion chamber but if oil were to get into the turbo intake you'd soon fill up the cylinder bores. With engine oil being so expensive, you'd have to be rich as well as stupid to do it :)

Don't get that - water/oil causing a "bottom end" Hydraulic. More info please - Oh is it coincidence that you post after me on any technical issue to disagree - its getting tiresome - however I look forwards to hearing the processes and damage of a bottom end hydraulic -and how this will damage the engine - many thanks.

Turned out to be not enough oil, and only had around roughly 5L in it.

Just need to solve the front gasket leak, which Adrian pointed out it's a common thing, when not done right.

Taking the niece and nephew out this week for 2 nights @ Beddgelert.
